Two years ago I looked into importing my '85ish French westy syncro into Canada, I was told that if the van was 10 years old I would have very little hassle.

So the solution is to leave your mate and kids, sneek off in the night and move to Canada - at least we/you'd be with our/your beloved vans. :-)
