David,

I apologize for all of the gratuitous, inflammatory commentary (referred to on the list as "flaming") that many people have given to you. Understand, of course, that some of it was irony, much like Seth's message. I'd hate to be asking for advice and get so much hazing from people.

Remember that when vehicles get to be a certain age, different types of reliability concerns appear. All in all, the Vgon seems to be no worse than Caravans, Astro Vans, Aerostars, etc. that are the same age. Look at the conditions that THOSE vans are in.

I would say that the way the bus was maintained has to be the biggest factor in your experience with one. You, therefore, have two options:

1. Buy a well-maintained Vanagon and enjoy a long, happy ownership, or

2. Do as I did, and buy one on the "deferred maintenance plan," otherwise known as the "parts payment plan."

In short, take your time, shop around, and judging from your admitted naïveté, bring a knowledgable, trusted friend with you shopping.

Best of luck, Sam
