Well, I finally got a chance to start playing with my
Westfalia-Werke puzzle last weekend....
I bought a Multivan interior from a curteous fellow listie and am
going to install it into my 85GL. After removing seats, carpet and
interior panels from my GL, my father-in-law and I went about trying to
fit everything in place:
The rear cabinet placement was a little vauge, I guess we'll have to
wait till the rear seat and the drivers-side interior panel are in place
to tell where exactly it goes.
The roof cabinet is, of course, designed for a pop-top van, which
has a flat ceiling inside. Any advice on this? We were thinking of
attaching it to the body just above the passenger-side rear window. I'd
hate to have to start cutting the headliner to fish around for some
mounting spot on the roof.
Also, the roof cabinet is designed for the AC, which my van already
has up front. Does anyone have any advice on making a door for the front
opening? Are the Westy hinge pieces available as replacement parts?
The rear seat/bed seems to fit just fine. It is going to take some
major drilling, as the mouting holes for the seat aren't there at all.
The rear facing seat is a big question for me. It'll take a bit of
work to install the mounting points to the floor, a bit of an odd design
too. it is easy to see why it was replaced by the jump seats in the
later MV's.
The biggest problem is going to be the interior panel with the
table. I was quite surprised to see that the table is self-supporting.
I was expecting a folding leg. Anyhow, from playing around with the
pieces we got, the mounting hardware that sits behind the wall seems to
fit okay except for two pieces:
After bolting the top piece to the vertical piece, and placing
it in the wall, we tried to fit the panel. Unfourtintately the hooked
piece of steel that the table's lock-pin rides on forces the whole kit
below the holes in the panel, because it runs into the bottom edge of the
bodywork. Is the body cut here on MV's or am I missing an adjustment?
Also, I have L-brackets that seem to fit at the botom of the
table mount, only I can't for the life of me figure out what they bolt
to. We're probably going to drill and fashion new L-brackets that fit.
On the subjet of the interior panels, how the heck do they mount? I
took a long look inside a MV in the garage at work today (nice one too,
90 or so, burgandy) and I see a big piece of edge trim at the top of the
panels. Does that wrap around and mount in the pop-mount holes? Is this
piece available? I really don't want to drill plastic.
I think that's about it. I'm going to get some seam rust cleaned up
while I have the interior out. Hopefully I'll have a hardtop MV for the
Columbus show Aug, 8!
