I have a friend with a really nifty bike rake. You need on of those square trailer hitches to use it, but it works great and fits on nearly any car. It plugs into the trailer hitch and holds the bikes securely. It basically looks like and L from the side, with the bottom part of the L plugging into the hitch. It doesnt' touch you car/van/truck at all, so there is no worry of paint or roof damage, and can quickly be removed.

Not sure how much they are, and if you don't have a trailer hitch then it probably would be more than $300, but they sure are neat.
