ok, for engine and suspension and body parts, there are no differences. same 2.1 liter water-cooled horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine. same choices of transmissions: 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic or 5-speed Syncro package (which comes with minor body changes: fuel filler is moved to the rear right corner; extra weight from additional 4wd mechanical parts and some reinforcement brackets/shields/etc. underneath).

so, "mechanically", they're very much the same.

it's in the Camper equipment and Options (power windows, power door locks, and so forth) that any differences will be found ... (from the VW Sales Brochures ... and we all know how accurate Sales Brochures are, right?? :) ...

as far as i can tell, there was NO Camper available ... only the Camper GL. the sales brochure makes NO mention of any other Camper. it also makes NO mention of the Syncro at all. it has this table about Options:

Option Packages P32, P33 and P34 are available on Vanagon GL; packages P35, P36 and P37 are available on CamperGL Additional available options: AM/FM stereo cassette radio with anti- theft protection; cruise control; power package including door locks and windows; automatic transmission; alloy wheels; California emissions (not all options are available for all models. see your dealer for details).

1989

same thing as 1988: there was NO Camper available ... only the Camper GL. but the Camper Syncro is back, and there is a new model bus: the Vanagon Carat (not a camper).

some things that are interstingly NOT listed as Standard on the Camper: EXTERIOR Full body side panesl with integrated bumpers Metallic paint Rear wiper and washer INTERIOR Central locking system

the Option Packages table has changed:

1990 just to screw things up a bit more, this year there is still only the Camper GL, and still the Carat, but now also a Multivan (Carat with a pop-top). no mention of the Syncro as a separate model ... it is listed only in the Specifications as "(Syncro models only)".
