Maybe I should be a bit ashamed to admit this, but I had the same problem
for a  couple of years on my 81 and never bothered to get it straight.
Here's what I did-  take your spare out and look straight up, you'll see a
black corrugated type tube that connects to your heater vent system.  It's
connected with a simple hose clamp.  Just take the tube off and maybe cover
the hole going into the van.  When winter rolls back around, reconnect.

Not exactly sure which of the things I had done actually did the trick, but
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that we keep runnin smooth all the way.

Though sometimes it seems to be worse than other times...
