You've picked the two polar extremes, in my opinion. My Toyota pickup (4 cyl, 2.2 L, Long box crew cab) is as reliable as anything I've ever owned, except maybe the 64 slant six 225 Valiant I put 225,000 miles on. The Vanagon will never match the Toyota for reliability. BUT I think the Vanagon is a match for most other vehicles (I've owned 51 vehicles, not counting motorcycles and boats) and the Vanagon is as reliable as most. Now, having said that, I have an air cooled, so I don't have the head problems that are the bane of the Wasserboxers. But heads aside, I think Vanagons are average for repairs, and a WHOLE lot more fun to own. (Of course, 22 of my 51 vehicles had Lucas electrics [Lucas, Prince of Darkness], so I developed a pretty high tolerance level for disaster.)
