A "knackered donk" is a worn out motor...note that this is a Subary transplant into an air-cooled Vanagon for which they had to rig up a radiator "up inder the guts".

Interesting pictures, especially the last one showing the Subaru oilpan sticking below the "custom made engine crossmember". I wonder what caused them to hack up and reweld the oilpan? Or do they come that way from the factory...with surgical scars?

It's too bad that the article never really shows a larger view of the completed installation from above, rear, and below.

I'm beginning to think that we're going to have to keep the Carat and Camper in the family for a loooong time... Here's hoping that California's smopg rules won't kill engine transplants within the next five years.

Anybody want to start a Subaru engine stockpiling biz as insurance against wasserboxer wearout?
