Ari & John - Maybe this is why the pre-'86 A/C is not covered by the Bentley book? Honest, unless the hi/lo pressure switch is utilized with some kind of adapter, we have been unable to find a connection for the high-pressure gauge. John, the '85 has the overhead unit mounted up front, the dryer mounted in the fender well on the left front and I have been unable to get much in the way of information about it.

Just got off the phone with the VW service manager in Chattanooga. Heard him ask their sole Van/Vanagon mechanic where it was and heard the response that it should be in the engine compartment, somewhere.. Asked the service manager if it was possible that it has NO high pressure port to connect a gauge. Said yes.

So, I'm already late for the evacuation/filling party with Randy. (doesn't THAT sound like an old college frat party!!!) Will trek on over to his house, full of Faith that 8.5oz of ester oil and 36oz of R134a is not going to blow his garage up! Will report in later this evening, barring any "911" event.

Has ANYONE seen any conversions to kerosene-fueled, ammonia-based A/C units suitable for placing in a Vanagon??? Grandmother's old kerosene refrigerator made it 50 years before it gave up the ghost.
