the John Muir book is for aircooled VW's. I can't recall the complete name but I have a copy sitting on the back seat of my bug (How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive - A Manual FOr The Complete Idiot ???). I think that there may be a version for aircooled but I don't think it covers Vanagons. Does anyone else know?

Congratulations on you purchase! A am also considering buying an 87 Westy. Was yours a GL? I remember from your last post that it cost around 5K, but how many miles were on the engine? The one I am looking at is in decent shape and they are asking 8.5K, but the odometer stopped after a rebuild and they say it only has 35k on it-around 110k for the whole van.

I am interested in the answers to your questions with an added twist: I have been using less toxic biodegradable coolant in my cars-will this cause any problems in an 87 Westy?

A partial answer to you synthetic oil question: regular oil will breakdown over time, while synthetic oil works great until a point where it breaks down very quickly. However, this should not be a problem with regular oil changes at the rec. interval. Natural oil can be recycled, but I don't know about the 2nd market for synthetics oils.

To answer (partially) your last question, there is a book call 'an idiots guide to keeping your VW alive' by John Muir (someone please send the right title!)-this is supposed to be one of the best guides. .

If you hear of any answers to your questions, please let me know.

Hi all,

I'm the proud new owner of a 1987 Westy...

My questions are these: 1. Is there a special kind of oil I need to use? Does anyone use and/or recommend synthetic oil?

2. I know I'ms supposed to use VW Coolant only, but do you have to drain the coolant out that's already in there or can you just add to it?

3. Is there any place I can get info on regular maintenance things that I need to be doing?

Thanks for all help! Leslie
