There is a fan at the rear of the fridge that blows air past the fins, to help the fridge work more efficiently. This fan is controlled by a thermoswitch which is screwed into one of the fins. Since the camper equipment gets 12v all the time, it doesn't matter if the fridge is on, the fan will work whenever the thermoswitch gets hot enough to start the fan, which can happen in a closed car in the summer.

I don't think you have to worry about it running the battery down, it doesn't draw a lot of current and I've never had any troubles with that sort of thing on my '81.
