Some research on my part has revealed that the wire turned out to be the OLD
starter wire.

I looked into the battery compartment and found the old battery cable shoved
down and off to the side.  I'll have to check the exact routing of the new one
to make sure all is OK.

I guess the old one chafed and/or shorted and was just left there after the
replacement. Whew!!! A little scare courtesy of the PO.
