The only reliable way to know if you have posi is to look at the reciept you got when you had it installed. Both tires will spin when there is no drag on them, it doesn't matter if you have limited slip or not. There's enough internal friction to spin them both when they're in the air.

I think that a lot of how well you do depends on tires as well. I had a '74 Bus and it was great off-road. I put some nice chunky tires on it and could go all over the place. I've heard that the Vanagon isn't as goo d as a bus, but I don't think that there is that much difference. I have road tires on my Vanagon now, and when I'm out in the woods I'm very careful where I go. I plan to put some nice grippy tires on this fall, hopefully it will make a difference.
