No, Mac, not the brake fluid.  I believe you have some internal leakage in
your brake master cylinder if you don't have any other leakage.  Brake
fluid level should not affect your brake pedal level unless your're really
out of brake fluid in your master cylinder.

 My guess was that this indicated a need for a little more
brake fluid.  Does this sound right?  If so, is this a task I can
perform in the parking lot before the two hour drive home?
