Susan: I would start by adding their names to Karl Bloss's gold medal maechanics list from a day or two ago. Homemade Rice Krispie treats tell me that the creator of such confectionary delights truly loves the recipient!! Embroider him a "World's Greatest VW mechanic" baseball cap or print a custom shirt with said text. If he's diabetic, skip the treats!! Offer to babysit his kids so he and the SO can ghet a much needed night away from it all. Positive letter to the Better Bussiness Bureau(mechanics can't get enough of those!). In my mind, these are the gratuities that will mark you as a grateful customer long after any cash gratuity has been spent on beer and pretzels at the local watering hole. Clean up his office, repaint his outdoor sign, make him a plaque from a trophy store showing appreciation. The thoughtfullness bucket is getting empty, so I'll quit. I sstroke my mechanic every chance I get whether it's bringing him used parts I can't use anymore(marketable stuff!), spare gaskets from a rebuild kit, or a cool looking miniature VW toy car for the offie desk or shelf.
