While I agree that the fluid level should be checked I am a bit perplexed as to why a T/O bearing would make more noise in first and reverse than the other gears? Also, wouldn't the bearing howl (all the bad ones I've heard did) instead of tumbling rocks?? Both first and reverse are just about the same ratio and put a bigger strain on the internals due to transfer of torque. I still think its a mainshaft bearing but we won't know until someone takes a look! ;)
