Subject: 86 vanagon automatic problems info needed

Hi, I am new to the list. I have a 86 vanagon GL automatic My problem is after 40k my rebuilt auto trans is starting to act up (not shifting when cold, occasional slipping with noise). After looking in the archives and searching the net I get the impression that generally the auto trans is reliable and usually lasts longer. I have also read that there may be other transmissions that can be used? Is there a FAQ on the auto trans? I can't find one. I would like to find out what will work in the van and what options I may have.

We have had the van about 8 yrs and like it, however the cost of repair (engine, trans, 2 steering racks complete front brakes, engine wiring harness, etc) is high so I am trying to decide what my options are. We have about 70k on a vw rebuilt motor and 140k total so I don't know what to expect next.

Does anyone have a bentley's for my van that they want to sell?

Thanks

Eric
