Well, with my world reknown physic powers I would suggest seeing a reputable VW mechanic in your area. There shouldn't be any 'rock tumbling' noise. I'll lay money that you have some sort of trans failure, probably the mainshaft bearing letting loose. But don't take my word on it! Go see that mechanic and hope for the best!
