Subject: 86 Rear Brakes
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

Here's an odd situation: I put new shoes on my 86's rear wheels today. Everything went well; it's not the first time I've done the brakes. I drove it; it worked fine. My wife drove it; she put the emergency brakes on, and drove 10-15 miles with them on. Toward the end of her driving, she noticed that the brakes weren't working well, she had to press her foot down to the floor to get it to stop. I came home about a half hour later; the hub caps were so hot I couldn't leave my fingers on them for more than a second. (I put the caps from an old 79 bus on my 86 (for those who insist the 86 has plastic caps...).) Now that it has cooled, the brakes still don't work well; I have to pump them a couple of times to build up pressure; and it still acts as though it is braking primarily from the front. Any hints for what I'm going to find when I remove the wheels again? What do I have to replace now??? Thanks. Scott
