Well, except that was the play increases, you may lose the grease (or in my case after driving through floor board deep standing water, wash the grease away). If you lose the grease, the bearings will etch a groove into the stub axle which is much more of a pain and much more costly to replace... I believe the manual has specs for play and I also believe they are not "falling off".
