Subject: 91 rear heater core-pulled it

Listees, What's that old saying....5 times bitten, sixth time shy? This is a strange time to be talking about heaters, but I've been forced to deal with mine. On my recent trip to vermont, the plastic 'valve' (where the coolant hoses connect to the core) opened its floodgates. I've gotten so tired of cleaning up coolant I decided to just take the damn thing out. I connected the two pieces of hose with a U-shaped piece of copper tubing. The leak came from between the two plastic valve peices that are screwed together with a rubber flat O-ring between them. Does VW sell this O-ring separately or do I have to buy the whole valve. Also, my valve has no on/off lever as shown in the bentley, that cuts off coolant flow to the core. Was it physically removed by the dpo, or is this common? As it is now (or was), coolant was constantly flowing through the core. All comments graciously accepted! I'm gonna need this thing come winter.
