I've opened it before. It's like an odometer which will trigger a switch (turn on the OXS light) for every preset miles. Once you reset it, it will start counting again. Push the button several times just to make sure you really have reset the mechanical counter. Like you reset the trip odometer to 0. The same box used to turn on the EGR light for the older VW's.
