The warning LED on my temp gauge(located over the clock) has never blinked when turning on the ignition like it should. I recently installed a new "coolant low level switch" (located on the expansion tank), thinking that might be the problem. No such luck. The wiring diagram for the 85 shows a "coolant low level warning control unit" between the expansion tank switch and the dash--anyone know where this might be located? Maybe stuck up under the dash? In the meantime, I will look for a replacement coolant temp gauge from the junkyard as the LED itself is integrated into the gauge. Is the same gauge used in other VW's?
