David, My digifant II experience is certainly different than yours. I too would have preferred the Motronic system, and would have used the 2.0 liter engine had I had access to one. Of course, the full ABA engine with the cross-flow head was not an option because I didn’t want to violate the interior envelope. Having built a number of engines for street and competition I wouldn’t have gone to the 150 HP stage of tuning with the weak 3/4 gear set of the Vanagon transmission. I wanted a torquer for this application. BTW, I should have stated that I had advanced the cam for low end torque. Probably put the torque band below 4200 (max around 3000). Actually, Techtronics had suggested 2 to 3 degrees retarded for the diesel trans to move the torque max up around 4500, given the high freeway RPM range.
