Not every mechanic is an expert with all engines. The title mechanic does not mean infallible. As many have said use 20W50 during the summer. I have driven many VW engines for several 100000kms using 20W50 in summer and 10W40 in winter. However, change you oil religiously every 5000 kms. My waterboxer is running strong at 245000 kms and my air cooled is running about 245000kms (replaced the valves though as preventive maintenance). 0W40 is hopefully a typo otherwise get a new engine too.
