A good deal of my extended family lives in Nova Scotia. My last visit was about 12 years ago, so it's a little fuzzy but....

I remember that the north end of Nova Scotia is a separate island called Cape Breton. There's a scenic route called the Cape Breton Trail that makes a circuit of the island near the ocean all the time. Several places with beaches (but the water's cold, even in August). One place to check out is called Meat Cove. It was kinda a hippy, folk art kind of hangout. I'm not sure it would be on any map, but the locals should be able to give directions. Great views to be had along the road to get there. Showing up in a Vanagon should make you welcome.

Also, I'd recommend taking the ferry from Maine to the Southern end of NS, at least one way. It's a lot less driving (New Brunswick is boring) and you get to spend some time on the ocean without site of land in any direction. Not good for those that get motion sick easily though.

If you run into anyone with the last name of Rudderham, tell them hello from me...it's sure to be one of my relatives (however distant).
