Subject: Mirror, Mirror, on the door.....!

About the only real complaint I ever had with the Vanagons......at least on my '85 GL was about the mirrors. Those silly little narrow vertically aligned side mirrors just never did cut it. Can't get a decent wide view out of them no matter what. Yeah, one can glue in a fish eye, or drill holes and install some kind of unorthodox thing iin the mirrors place, but it still is not the same as a good factory mirror. Nobody seems to make a decent, specific to the vanagon, aftermarket mirror that gives the wide view. I tried swapping mirrors to opposite sides. The right door mirror works pretty well on left when installed by the driver. Nice wide view, easy to adjust. But the lesft hand mirror doesn't do so hot when put on the right hand door. Due to the angle necessary for the drive to see out of it, it jambs against its base and won't turn far enough in. It looks as if all that would be necessary to make the swap work would be a different base mounting block.

Has anyone ever tackled that job and made different mounting blocks?
