The 1990 model-year was L You've picked perhaps an unfortunate example that continues to confound owners, dealers, and MotorVehicle departments...and plays havoc with vehicle valuations for insurance and registration purposes. I have a pair of vanagons (Camper and Carat) which were manufactured during what is normally the 1991 model-year run (10/90 and 2/91, respectively) but due to California's pollution rules could ONLY be sold here as 1990 model-year vehicles...So VW gave these 1991 vehicles, 1990 model-year VIN numbers!
