Thanks to all on the list for your ideas and suggestions as to the
remedy of my loud cooling fan. After checking out the entire circuit, I
found the green resistor behind the drivers headlamp. This was the
problem, so I called the dealer in Olywa and was told it was only
......are you ready 145.00 U.S.!!!!!!!! And they did not even have one
in stock, but I could pay 20.00 extra to have it overnighted. My urgency
in fixing this prob is that Im leaving today for the north cascades and
canada for a week or so and would prefer to run cooler temps. So rather
than give up 145.00 big bucks I opted for the run to the wrecking yard
and guess what no Vanagons in site. So I headed to the Audis and found
that the late model Audi 5000 uses the same fan but a different
resistor. This resistor sits on the frame under the drivers headlamp and
is attached with three phillips screws. Its actually a pretty nice piece
and with no modification fits great behind the vanagon headlamp. So the
fan now works on low speed and is much quiter than high speed. No more
embarresing looks from the people in the lane next to me! So for all of
you who helped with this one a great big thank you! Vanagon Karma is a
good thing.
