On the L-Jetronic systems with the O2 sensor, you can get a close approximation of the "correct" mixture by monitoring the voltage output of the sensor while adjusting the mixture. You adjust until the output is about .5 volts; you never really see a steady .5 volts, but a rapid fluctuation above and below that point. Counterclockwise leans and clockwise richens.
