Check out the low power halogen fixtures from West Marine who has retail stores and catalogue (pages 538-540) @1-800-262-8464. Performance of these halos is reportedly better because they shine brighter, last longer, require less wattage, and do not dim with age. They are not cheap to buy but are cheap to run and since they last longer, total cost is supposed to be lower. Some model have swivel bases or rotate & swivel and most provide spot lighting for reading, etc. without bothering your SO.

I wired in a small fluorescent fixture (two bulb, 12" long) from an RV supply store and, using plastic wire ties, attached it to the bar to raise the camper roof which allows for "broadcast" lighting...does a good job of lighting up the interior from above with no obnoxious light in your eyes.
