Don, Yeah, I knew it's a guessing work on refrigerate oil. That's why I took the compressor out just to dump the old oil and put a correct amount of new oil into the compressor. The Bentley book breaks down the amount of oil for each A/C components (even includes the hoses but they missed the evaporator). It calls for 54oz for compressor only. The reason why I add more than that because the oil have been circulated with freon for several years and if the oil in compressor has only 10 oz left, then condenser and evaporator will have a lot less oil than specified on Bentley. That whey I suspect the VW mechanic did not put enough oil at time he put in the new compressor.

The oil in the comprssor is not trapped there. It is free to circulate around the system with the other oil. The VW amount of oil they say should be put in new compressors is just the amount that they expect to be necessary in a typical system. The only way to really be sure would be to drain all the oil from the system and start from scratch.
