Original thread, burnt out LED's on the camping gear.

LED's should be available piece part at any electronics store or supply house, or Radio Shack. Make sure you are careful unsoldering the old one, and especially careful that the new one go in EXACTLY the same way. There should be a "flat" on one side of the LED that would give you an orientation.

*** OK, let me add to this post, obviously, someone got the word out about Radio Shack.

Derek (or someone else who has the problem and can dismantle the circuit board) Follow the circuit traces to identiy all components in line with the LED in question. You should find some resistors, or at least one. The resistor will drop the voltage to the LED. What is the value of that resistor. You may see a color code on the resistor, the value can be determined from the color code.

I would expect to find a couple of hundred ohms, maybe as much as 1000 ohms, and that a nominal voltage value on the LED would be abou........

argh, I'm a bozo. that's what I get for for staying up all night last night, pulling the engine/tranny out of the GTI donor car so I could go to West Side to have it inserted into my 16V. It's a long story, but one blinkin nut on the down tube was rusted so bad, .........

Here's the real scoop:

* Check subgroup 97 in Bently, "Electrical System - Wiring, Camper

You will find a repair and trouble shooting guide for the camper electronics. The voltage across ANY standard LED is 0.7 volts. There ARE dropping resistors, and the polarity of the LED is shown.

* Check subgroup 90 in Bently, "Electrical System - Instruments, Radio

Here they imply that you can replace the LED's. I assume any VW dealer will have them. If not, ANY LED that can handle about 100 ma, and is the correct PHYSICAL size will do. Make sure you get the correct color.

So..... it's in Bently, VW should have, ANY LED so long as physical size is correct, ALL LED's drop 0.7 volts across them when correctly installed.

(p.s., yeh, yeh, I know, there are LED's of different voltage drop, and a Zener diode will drop varying voltages depending on design, but you want the STANDARD 0.7 volt voltage drop LED.)

(p.p.s., ok, I don't have a Radio Shack catalog handy here, but if you want, I'll drop over to Radio Shack and pick one out. Several I supose, for the differnt colors. Post the list or p-mail me, if you need me to do this.)
