While I was in there putting in oil cooler seals and a nice clean test oil cooler, I looked at the engine mounts and decided that I would replace them. Was I glad I did. When I took out the old ones, they basically FELL APART! I suppose they are the originals. The rubber was brittle and the metal parts were no longer connected by the rubber. The van has about 155k miles on it.

Also about the oil cooler: the upper surface where the cool air hits it was about 50% plugged up with oily dirt and crud. That means it was only doing about a 50% job of cooling the oil. This was caused by the previous owner not replacing the large seal around the engine tin. I'm sure that lots of road dirt and pieces of insulation from the engine lid got into the fan and from there to the cooler. A clue to this problem is a very dirty engine compartment. So..... if you're having oil temp problems, this might be in your future.

A properly maintained 2.0 aircooled engine should stay quite cool. My 914 has a modified 2.0 engine and just the stock oil cooler. It rarely gets over halfway on the gauge, even with the 100 degree temps we've had here in central Texas.
