It is almost the same as the 93+ VW engine only it is CIS from the factory and it is the same height as the 1600 and 1800 cc blocks (93+ is 16.5mm taller). If you are going to install it into a Diesel Vanagon then yes it is the same deal as other VW engines in respect to the oil pan/pump and bell housing. One thing to keep in mind is the CIS head is unique as compaired to other CIS engines. There is no injector holes in the head - they are in the intake manifold for better cooling. This means that unless you swap the head over to a VW 1.8L head you are stuck with "right hand" injection - no problem in my case.
