Subject: Re: 2wd Syncro? -Different F/R Final Ratio?
Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Syncro is slower and does have less gas mileage with all the 4WD overhead
just like any other 2WD and 4WD SUV's. But I couldn't believe the final
differential ratio is different between the front and rear until I checked
the Bentley. It is different: front: 4.86 vs. rear 5.43. It actually
against the theory of the Syncro automatic 4WD system: the silicon viscous
coupling will lock up automatically when it heat up by the different rpm's
between front differential shaft and drive shaft from rear differential
hence transmit the engine force to all 4 wheels. Then I saw Derek's post:
5.43 is for European diesel and 4.86 is for USA gas engine. I believe
Bentley may have a misprint. Any thoughts?

Subject: Re[2]: 2wd Syncro?
The front and rear differentials on a syncro have different ratios. This
means
that even on a dry & flat road the viscus coupling is slipping and
consuming
power. I have done exactly this for a time and it does increase milage and
makes
the van feel hundreds of pounds lighter.

Subject: Re: Transaxle Shop/Syncro r/p ratios
After studying my European microfiche, showing all parts for the Vanagon
available over there, I have determined that the following final drive gear
ratios are available for the syncro transmission:
37/6 6.17 (16" vanagon?)
35/6 5.83 (diesel?)
38/7 5.43 (diesel?)
34/7 4.86 (DEFAULT USA) This is what all you gasoline people have.
32/7 4.57 (?)
