Mark,
Go to the VW dealer as soon as you can. The outer CV boots for Syncro are
very easy to break because of the stiff angle designed on the outer CV's.
That's why VW superseded the original black rubber boots to harder WHITE
plastic type boots. It supposed to stronger than rubber but you need a lot
more torque to tighten up the clamps otherwise you're going to have some
grease leak. I think the rubber band is for protecting the metal clamp
but it is very easy to break off. I replaced both sides 2 years ago and
at time both old larger rubber band were gone. Now one of the larger
rubber band is gone also.
Good luck,

Subject: syncro front CV boot replacement
I had a VW dealer replace the two front outer CV boots on my syncro last
week as I don't have the time to do the job myself right now. One of the
boots they used didn't look like the correct part for the syncro (different
material, no rubber bands to cover the retaining clips) so I called the
dealer and was told that they only had 1 syncro boot kit in stock and used
a
boot from the same manufacturer with the same specs as the proper syncro
boot. The boot they used does appear to fit just fine, but I'm concerned
that it won't last as long as the proper syncro boot. Plus, the boot
doesn't
have the rubber bands to cover the retaining clips. What is the purpose of
these rubber bands?
The dealer offered to replace the boot with the correct part free of
charge.
Seems like a no brainer to do this but actually it's quite a hassle to get
the van to and from the dealer and to be without transportation for a day.
So I ask for list wisdom here--should I go through the hassle of getting
the
proper boot?
