Todd, Thanks for the inside info. on Syncro 094 transmission. This really make me wondering about the design and quality of the VW products. I was always wondering why does VW specify GL-4 gear oil for their manual transmissions. I have a hard time to get any info. from my VW dealer and they themselves don't even use GL-4 gear oil in their service dept. Can you tell us where can I get GL-4 Redline MTL or MT-90? I didn't see those at Pep Boys' etc. BTW, is there a easy way to check/refill the Syncro 094 transmission/rear differential and front differential? I've tried once but these refill plugs just get blocked by the Syncro sub-frames. TIA Yi-Ruey Wei 87 Vanagon GL Syncro w/78K miles 85 Jetta GLI w/165K miles Dallas, TX

VW realized that there was a problem with the GL5 petroleum based gear oil causing a hard shift. ...> ... W/O starting another 'whats the best gear oil for my transaxle' debate I would suggest giving the synthetic gear oil a try. I realize that the G50 VW oil is expensive- around $20+ a quart so if you elect not to use that then I have had very good success with Redline MTL or MT-90. Whatever you choose to use make sure that it is GL4 rated and not the others. If that does not due the trick then start saving your money for the upcoming rebuild.
