VW dealers did it again! Not only they put wrong CV boot "intentionally",
but they charge outrageous price for our poor Vanagon owners. Actually I
just called my friendly VW parts person, he quoted me 2 long hoses (one
from dryer to condenser and from condenser to evaporator) for $252 and
$271. But he said these hoses are no longer available. Which means
John's dealer may not use genuine VW parts (remember Mark's Syncro CV
boot?) . Go to any reputable A/C shop or NAPA they can custom made A/C
hoses for you. One thing I don't like about these hoses is they camp the
new hose on the old connector which not as reliable as the new one. But
if the new hoses are so expensive and not available, I think that is the
only choice now. Of course pulling these A/C houses out will be a big
challenge!
BTW, you don't need to replace all hoses most of time. I believe high
pressure hoses (from compressor to dryer/condenser or from condenser to
evaporator) are the one easy to bust. Make sure the leak is NOT between
connectors ( if that is the case, you need a $1 o-ring) and make sure check
the high pressure after the freon charge. Sometimes incorrect high
pressure will cause the hose to bust.

The staggering dealer price of new A/C hoses for my 86 Syncro has sent
me to the list once more for some help. (they quoted 'about' $1600 for
the hoses and a new dryer). Installed they want $3000+ !!
Is there a good source for these hoses? How difficult is it to DIY?
