I did it about 10yrs ago on an 82 Vanagon.  Went to the FLAPS and he cut
me some AC hoses to my measurements.  I used "push-in" fittings for AC
which has small barbs to hold the hose on under pressure.  I also used
hose clamps.  I bought a universal dryer for about $29 back then. It
worked very well - no fittings leaked. I don't remember the total cost
but not much back then.

Also - look in the yellow pages under Auto - Parts, I just saw one FLAPS
which will custom make the hoses for you with the "pressed-on" fittings -
much better!
