Will anectodal evidence from a primary source be definitive enough? I had an '81 "basic" camper which had EXACTLY the layout and accoutrements described by the original poster of the question...the fridge position in the cabinet was occupied by an ICEbox and nothing more!

Bentley may be referring to Canjun versions...

Later, there were several pop-top Weekender versions with a 12v refrigerator behind the passenger seat that looked like a cooler (icechest). This evolved into the Multivan and the EV MV "weekender"...
