Scott, a whine like you describe sounds like a power steering pump failure is iminent. That is the way mine sounded. The pump was easy to replace. One of the easier tasks on the vanagon.

Subject: Whining sound, 86 GL

About a month ago I mentioned this whining sound coming from the rear. I'm pretty sure it isn't the (new) alternator.

Has anyone had a fuel pump that whined (progressively higher in pitch concurrent with increased engine revving)? I can't hear anything back near the engine, but it may be coming from underneath the floorboards.

Thanks. Scott
