Hi Roger, you absolutely do not have to remove that big nut on the hub. Just
back off the adjusting stars in the rear of drums through that hole in the
back, on top. I believe  there's also a small bolt to remove in the middle of
the drum. Then slide the drums off and go at it. No problem from there on.
When appart, clean the threads on the adjusters and pay attention to how they
work. When you are done with the work, before you put the wheels on, the
finall adjustment is to turn those stars to push the shoes against the drums,
then back them off just slightly so there's no resistance.  Bugs are the same.
