This may be a stupid question, but did you make sure that your cold start
valve was correctly installed (and hooked to the right plug) on
reinstallation?  If it is not delivering a shot of fuel to the engine when
you crank the key the first time, it could cause this hard start problem.
You could unscrew it but leave it hooked up (hold it against a rag or into a
cup to avoid the risk of fire), and see if it shoots out fuel while someone
cranks the engine.
