I also have a 83.5 Westy and the throtle cable sticks when hot.  All
that heat up front does something to it. I sprayed oil everywhere,
especially in both cable ends.  I'm thinking that if you disconnect
the cable and tie the new cable to the old, you may be able to pull it
thru without any disassembly.  Let my know how it goes.
