Kim, I remember my VW dealer told me I can either get a revised/improved 2-piece evaporator housing for over $500 or use the free repair kit. I chose the latter of course. I wonder if you can return your unused housing and get the repair kit. Sounds like it will work better and a lot cheaper. BTW, I can't find any notes mentioned the design changes on Bentley. All diagrams on my Bentley show the same design like mine. May be you have a newer edition? Regards, Yi-Ruey Wei 87 Vanagon GL Syncro w/78K miles 85 Jetta GLI w/165K miles Dallas, TX

... The evaporator housing design was changed in VW's production run (it actually notes this in the Bentley). There was no recall for the change. The replacement part has the bolt holes go straight up (no tab to break off). The replacement part is $500, or so from the dealer.

I actually have purchased this for my Syncro, but haven't replaced it yet (my tab is broken only on one side, passenger, and I haven't been motivated enough to pull the whole thing down to do the replacement.) I have to make some brackets, or adapter to deal with the movement of the bolt holes, and/or to cover up the old ones.
