Kurt,
I knew the VW dealers sell these boot kits which have everything you need
for $49 a piece (inner or outer). You can check the price with Bus Depot
or any other vendors on the vanagon.com web page. Other sources are German
Parts & Restoration (1-800-321-5432; Greg or Dave) and Parts Place
(1-248-373-2300). Make sure to get the stronger WHITE boots for outer CV.
BTW, I use VW genuine parts (not if it's a Bosch though) because it
normally fit better and have good quality. I'd pay more on quality parts
to save my time since I always try to fix problems by myself. One
experience I've learned is that once I had a wrack on my right axle of my
Jetta. The shop told me he'll put a VW axle in since I requested it.
Later when I needed a new inner boot, I found I couldn't put the new C clip
in because the gap was just a little too tight. I had to settle to re-use
the old C clip. The reason? that shop put an OEM Lobro axle instead of the
VW genuine which caused all the trouble I had later. (Now you know why I'd
like to do it by myself if possible!)
You need a big 32mm(?) socket and a long metal pipe to loose the axle nut.
You also need a VERY GOOD 6mm Allen bit to loose the inner CV. A 250 ft-lb
torque wrench will be needed when you put the axle nut back. I only
separated the upper arm ( I think Bentley said you need to separate
everything ) since I was lazy but it's quite a challenge to take the whole
axle out. Make sure buy the strongest nut adhesive (red color) from Pep
Boy's or alike and apply it on the hub area like the Bentley suggested.
Good luck,
Yi-Ruey Wei
