I'm NOT trying to "mislead" people (like our President did) to buy more
expensive VW PS fluid. Besides, it's NOT expensive if you compare how much
you have to pay ($500 for new, $420 rebuild) for a new/rebuild power
steering rack. And it's NOT like VW coolant you need to replace it very so
often (but the manual said it's a permanent coolant! ). I bought a $20
1-liter metal can (Since people were asking, it's called VW/Audi "Oil for
Hydraulic System and Power Assisted Steering", VW #G002000, made in
Germany. Audi dealers charge more for the same PS "oil". There is a
cheaper 12 fl.oz. bottle too. ) 5 years ago and still don't have a chance
to use it. My thinking was that the ATF is designed for automatic
transmissions and if there is a PS oil designed specifically for (VW) power
steering, why not use it. As I mentioned before, Audi used to have
infamous steering rack leaking problem caused by people adding regular PS
fluid or ATF and those were not friendly to the Audi rack seals. Even
though Audi is not VW, but they are sister companies and they may use same
vendors to make power steering racks. I just don't want risk the expensive
PS rack to mix the original VW PS oil with ATF or regular American made PS
fluid which may caused the early failure on the seals.

This is totally wrong! ATF is what I have been using for years. It
has never been a problem. My 2 wheel drive Vanagon had 130,000 miles
on It without a leak! Flushed the system at 40,000 miles.
Let not miss lead people....It's expensive!
