Subject: '85 Westy Camper: What to watch for?

Hello, all.

I'm a newbie to the list and have been lurking for only a week. However, it has been made clear to me that the list has great value as a resource for wonderful information.

Here's situation/question:

I just purchased an '85 Westy Camper (Auto tranny, 62k, excellent cond., from the original owner, $3,800). I've never owned one before, but rode around the country in one for about two months when I was ten (and I've wanted one ever since).

I generally do simple engine work (up to, but usually not exceeding replacing an alternator, etc), and leave more intense engine work to the real mechanics.

____Are there any model/year specific problems I should look for as I begin to drive the van for day-to-day use?___

These are the things I've already noticed that need work or replacement:

replace sink pump hose (not the sink pump itself) because it leaks (so the FPO says). replace hydraulic lifters for back hatch find dash knob for aux. heater

Also, when I first drove the van home, the coolant warning light was flashing. (I checked fluid level, all was ok) It continued to flash the second time I drove the van, but stopped after about 5 minutes of flashing. The coolant level gauge started on empty the first drive and the second. On the second drive, it slowly rose to an acceptable level (obviously, at the same time, the light stopped flashing)

The van was parked for at least a week on an incline (nose up), so if the sensor for the coolant gauge is in the front (wasserboxer), then it all makes sense. _______If not, any ideas?___________

TIA for any and all recommendations!
