Scott, I had a similar noise on my '74 1800 rebuilt GEX engine as soon as I
fired it up after install.  It turned out to be exhaust leaking out around the
heads.  GEX had stuck the original heads back on without flycutting them,
after I had returned the engine under warranty with a busted crank.  The heads
did not seal properly and leaked.

I hope this is not your problem.
